Georgia First Responders PTSD Benefit

First responders serving University System of Georgia institutions gained access to benefits under the Ashley Wilson Act effective January 1, 2025. Benefits are payable if you are diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that arises from your service for any Georgia public entity. The Act requires that first responders can quickly and confidentially obtain a lump-sum payment upon diagnosis and long term disability benefits, if needed.

  • Lump Sum Benefit

A $3,000 lump-sum benefit is paid following the diagnosis of occupational PTSD by a qualified provider.

Benefits are paid directly to you and there is no coordination with other insurance coverage. The lump sum payment is exempt from federal and Georgia state tax.

  • Long Term Disability Benefit

If you are no longer able to perform your duties as a first responder due to your PTSD diagnosis, you may be eligible for long term disability benefits.

    • The disability benefit begins 90 days following a first responder’s inability to continue regular occupational or volunteer duties as a first responder due to the covered condition, despite receipt of appropriate treatment.
    • The disability benefit is paid monthly for up to 36 months.
    • Paid first responders receive 60% of their monthly pay to a maximum of $5,000 per month.
    • Volunteer first responders receive $1,500 per month.

Benefits are paid directly to you and there is no coordination with other insurance coverage. Payments are exempt from federal and Georgia state tax.
